Beautiful story and recipe. I once cooked for Sam Nunn, once a famous USA Senator from Georgia. He liked the meal so much he came into the kitchen to thank me and talk. His eyes closed as he rhapsodized about his grandmother's Apple Stack Cake (a traditional Southern cake). The story was so vivid I could taste it in my mind as well. He asked if I could make it for him the next time he came to dinner. I apologized and firmly said no. Delicious memories of dishes cooked by revered loved ones are best left as a pleasant memory. It is not only the unconditional love of your mother, but the childhood memory coupled with all the associations that make that dish even better. I appreciate your voice David.
